Meet Joe Gonzales
Jose “Joe” Gonzales brings over 40 years of dedicated law enforcement service, leadership, and community involvement to his candidacy for Sheriff of Sandoval County. His career reflects a lifelong commitment to public safety, professional development, and service with integrity.
Gonzales began his law enforcement journey in 1981 shortly after graduating high school. He started as a meter-man and constable before transitioning to animal control. In 1986, he was sworn in as a police officer, spending the next 11 years on patrol. During that time, he was honored as Officer of the Year, served as a Field Training Officer, and became a certified instructor in firearms, domestic violence, and general policing. He advanced to Detective, investigating special crimes and crimes against persons, and was later promoted to Sergeant, supervising patrol operations.
Over the course of his career, Gonzales earned Master Instructor certifications in both Firearms and Instructor Development and holds an Executive Law Enforcement Certification—a recognition of his high-level experience and leadership in law enforcement. He has dedicated 29 years to training officers as a certified police instructor, mentoring countless professionals across multiple agencies.
In 2005, following a brief retirement, Gonzales joined the New Mexico Gaming Control Board as a Special Agent, later promoted to Sergeant, supervising agents across the southern region. He also served as the Board’s firearms instructor and evidence technician.
In 2008, Gonzales was hired by the Sandoval County Sheriff's Office as a Patrol Deputy. His leadership and commitment earned him a nomination for Deputy of the Year and a promotion to Sergeant. He continued serving as an instructor and Field Training Officer, playing a key role in shaping the next generation of deputies.
In 2015, Gonzales joined the Sandia Police Department as a Patrol Officer, where he served as a firearms instructor and Officer in Charge on several occasions.
In 2019, Gonzales was again hired by the Sandoval County Sheriff’s Office, this time as Undersheriff, a position he proudly holds today. In this role, he has led major departmental advancements, including launching the first-ever K-9 Unit and Street Crimes Unit, modernizing training platforms, securing updated patrol and animal control vehicles, and acquiring personal protective equipment. Gonzales has overseen budget growth, added staff, improved deputy compensation, and strengthened the working relationship with the deputies' union. His training programs now benefit agencies throughout and beyond Sandoval County.
Gonzales has also served as an adjunct instructor with the New Mexico Law Enforcement Academy, where he has helped train and mentor officers from across the state.
Beyond his official duties, Gonzales has always prioritized giving back to the community. He has volunteered as a youth football coach, supported his local church alongside his late wife, and dedicated time to the Police Explorer Program, mentoring young people interested in careers in law enforcement.
Joe Gonzales was married for 34 years until the passing of his beloved wife. Together, they built a blended family of four children and are the proud grandparents of nine grandchildren. His commitment to family, service, and mentorship continues to drive his vision for a stronger, safer Sandoval County.
Outside of his profession as a law enforcement officer, Gonzales finds joy in outdoor activities and working on home projects. He enjoys applying his skills as a gun armorer, listening to music, and spending meaningful time with close friends. These personal interests reflect his down-to-earth nature, craftsmanship, and appreciation for balance in life.
Jose “Joe” Gonzales is a highly respected law enforcement executive, master instructor, and lifelong public servant—ready to lead as your next Sheriff of Sandoval County.
